Coalport Community Orchard

A Fruitful Spot in Coalport

Planted by local volunteers in 2006, Coalport Community Orchard is a charming green space situated close to Haywood and the Coalport China Museum. As you wander through the orchard, you’ll discover a variety of apples, pears, plums, and cherries — all free for the community to collect. Don’t forget to bring a basket in the autumn and enjoy the harvest!

Community orchards like Coalport do more than provide fruit — they are vital havens for wildlife. The combination of fruit trees, grassland, hedgerows, and scrub creates a mosaic of habitats that support birds, insects, and other local species.

“….orchards have always formed an intimate and distinctive feature in the landscape, many having endured on the same site for hundreds of  years….conservationista have also come to recognise the rich ecology and biodiversity of orchards reflected in a wide range of species including an array of invertebrates, butterflies, moths, birds, bats etc.  There is a growing interest in orchard skills lost over a couple of generations but reacquired without difficulty given the interest.”  Michael J Pooley (1951-2010)

The orchard is managed by the Trust with the help of volunteers, who carry out winter pruning and maintenance sessions to keep it healthy and productive.
