Woodside Community Orchard
A Taste of History in the Heart of Coalbrookdale
During the 18th and 19th centuries, the Severn Gorge was filled with orchards, and this site was once known as Brick Kiln Gardens. Over time, the orchard became derelict, but thanks to the dedication of local residents and volunteers, it was re-established in 2000 with the planting of new fruit trees.
Set in the heart of Coalbrookdale, Woodside Community Orchard is now a thriving community space and a great source of free fruit. Bring a basket in the autumn and enjoy collecting seasonal apples and other fruits!
The orchard was planted with guidance from the Shropshire Apple Trust, using trees supplied by Dolau-hirion Nursery, and is now managed by the Trust. Volunteers help maintain the orchard during winter pruning and maintenance days, keeping the orchard healthy for years to come.
What is a Community Orchard?
A community orchard is a shared green space where fruit trees are planted, cared for, and enjoyed by the local community. Unlike commercial orchards, the focus is not on profit — it’s about bringing people together, supporting biodiversity, and providing access to fresh fruit for everyone.
Community orchards often:
- Grow local or heritage fruit varieties, helping preserve regional species.
- Offer volunteer opportunities for planting, pruning, and general maintenance.
- Serve as a gathering space, hosting workshops, events, or educational activities.
- Promote sustainability and wildlife, providing habitats for birds, bees, and other pollinators.
They are a way to reconnect people with nature, enjoy fresh produce, and celebrate local heritage — all while building stronger community ties.
