Explore Haywood – Woodland, Grassland, and Industrial History Above Coalport

Haywood is a scenic mix of woodland and open grassland situated on the sunny, south-facing slopes above Coalport, within the Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site. Offering stunning views and peaceful walking routes, this diverse landscape is perfect for a day outdoors—especially when the sun is shining across the grassy hills.

A Modern Woodland with Historic Roots

While much of Haywood was originally farmland, the landscape was partially transformed in the 1980s and 1990s by the Telford Development Corporation, who planted areas with:

  • Larch and Scots pine
  • Ash and oak

In a quirky twist, some of these early plantations were even arranged to spell the word “TELFORD”—a nod to the area’s modern development and planning history.

Ties to the Industrial Revolution

In the 18th and 19th centuries, Haywood was part of Hay Farm, owned by the pioneering Darby family—key figures in the Industrial Revolution. The farm played a vital role in supporting local industry, especially through the breeding of hundreds of horses used in transport and heavy labour throughout the Gorge’s ironworks and collieries. Today, part of the original farm has been repurposed as a local golf course.

Walks and Wildlife

Haywood offers a network of footpaths that wind through its woodland and grassland, providing scenic views and a chance to connect with nature and history. Some of these trails are described in detail in the Trust’s guidebook:
Jackfield & Coalport: Five Historic Guided Walks

Whether you’re looking for a quiet stroll, a bit of local heritage, or a place to spot wildlife, Haywood delivers a peaceful and rewarding walking experience.
