Captains Coppice

Explore Captains Coppice – A Historic Woodland in Coalbrookdale

Tucked into the western slopes of Coalbrookdale, Captains Coppice is a beautiful 11-acre (4.5 hectare) woodland rich in seasonal colour and historic character. This tranquil area has been managed as plantation woodland since the 19th century and is now being revived through traditional woodland practices.

A Woodland with Seasonal Charm

Dominated by mature beech and sycamore, with scattered ash and oak, Captains Coppice offers a peaceful woodland experience year-round. In spring and early summer, the forest floor transforms into a carpet of wild garlic, filling the air with a distinctive aroma as its delicate white flowers bloom—a truly magical sight for walkers and nature lovers.

Traditional Coppicing and Sustainable Craft

Today, the lower section of Captains Coppice is leased to the Small Woods Association, where traditional coppicing techniques are being reintroduced. These sustainable methods help maintain woodland health and biodiversity while supplying natural materials for hands-on woodland craft courses like:

  • Hedgelaying
  • Hurdle-making
  • Other heritage crafts

By reviving these age-old practices, Captains Coppice plays a vital role in environmental education, conservation, and community engagement.
