Volunteer With Us

Making new friends, keeping fit, working in an amazing landscape and knowing that you are helping your local environment are all great reasons for becoming a volunteer.

Volunteering with the Severn Gorge Countryside Trust is more than just lending a hand—it’s a chance to make new friends, stay active, and work in one of the most beautiful landscapes around. Plus, you’ll be helping to protect and enhance your local environment. What could be better?

Why Volunteer?

  • Meet like-minded people who share your love of nature.
  • Keep fit while enjoying the great outdoors.
  • Gain new skills and learn about conservation.
  • Make a real difference in caring for the landscape of the Ironbridge Gorge.

What Do Volunteers Do?

Since 2006, our incredible team of about 40 volunteers has been instrumental in maintaining the Gorge’s access infrastructure, from building paths and steps to installing kissing gates. With training from our staff and contractors, volunteers also:

  • Summer: Hand-scythe meadows and identify wildflowers.
  • Winter: Take on hedge-laying and coppicing.

How to get involved:

We meet every Thursday from 10 am to 3 pm, working at different sites within the Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site and surrounding areas. Whether you’re a first-timer or returning to help again, we’d love to welcome you!

Simply click the link to register your interest, and we’ll be in touch to answer your questions and get you started. You can also check out our current volunteer programme below to see what’s coming up in the next few weeks.

Join us and discover the joy of giving back to your local green spaces while having fun and learning along the way.

Corporate Volunteering

Corporate Volunteering Opportunities in the Ironbridge Gorge

Are you a local business or organisation looking to give back to the community? We welcome corporate volunteering from individuals, teams, and staff groups who want to support the conservation of the Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site.

Small Teams (Up to 5 People)

If you’re a small group of up to 5 people, you’re very welcome to join one of our regular volunteer sessions, which take place every Thursday from 10am to 3pm. It’s a great opportunity to get outdoors, meet like-minded people, and make a real difference in the landscape.

Larger Groups and Tailored Volunteer Days

For larger corporate groups, we’re happy to create a bespoke volunteering experience to suit your needs. Whether you’re looking for a short team-building activity or a full day of hands-on conservation, we can:

  • Accommodate sessions from 2 to 5 hours
  • Offer activities across multiple sites in the Ironbridge Gorge
  • Tailor tasks to suit your group’s interests and abilities

We’ll work with you to design a rewarding and safe day for your team.

Seasonal Activities

Please note: our conservation tasks vary throughout the year. For example, tree work is limited in spring and summer due to nesting birds. If you have a specific activity in mind, let us know in advance and we’ll advise on seasonal availability.

Get in Touch

To discuss a corporate volunteering day or to book your group, please contact Amber, our Volunteer and Community officer, on vco@severngorge.org.uk. or call 01952 433880

All tools, PPE and training for each task will be provided, as well as drinks and biscuits! As a charity we always welcome donations towards our work, whether they be monetary or goods (we get through a lot of gloves and tools!).

If you can include the following information it will help to speed up the process:

  • What is the estimated size of your group? If 30 or more, would you be willing to split into smaller groups over multiple days?
  • Are you looking for a full or half day volunteering?
  • Are there any tasks that particularly interest your group or any skills that your group can offer to help? Some examples of tasks include coppicing, hedge laying, step and boardwalk maintenance, scrub clearance, orchid counting, and lots more!
  • How soon are you looking to volunteer? Some tasks are season dependent e.g. tree work tends to be autumn/winter only.
  • Does your group have a budget? Some tasks may only be possible if we can raise funding for materials, e.g. step and boardwalk replacement.
  • Are there any special requirements for your group? A lot of our sites can be tricky to access and may not have any facilities nearby. If your group has any specific access requirements, please let us know.
